An American Airlines employee was recently threatened by the company because he posted videos on YouTube making fun of the company executives. This video has caused quite a bit of commotion within the company and Gailen David, a man who has worked at American Airlines for twenty-four years, might just lose his job. When asked to comment David stated, “You know what? It gave everybody at American a laugh that we so needed.”
In one video, David was dressed as a female executive holding a toy plane. The video title was ‘Aluminum Lady’- “a parody of the movie ‘Iron Lady’ about a former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher”. In another video, David was posed as an American Airline executive reading a letter that was recently given to the employees from the executive.
In the letter American Airlines announced that they had declared bankruptcy and will be letting go of 2,300 flight attendants. After the release of the YouTube videos, David was contacted by his bosses and was demanded to remove the videos. He was then summoned to a disciplinary meeting, which he did not attend. David was told by his superiors that if he failed to attend the meeting he would be fired for insubordination. However, there has been no official word as to whether he has been terminated or not.
The company spokesman commented, “We expect our employees to treat one another with respect. While we recognize our employees’ right to express their viewpoints, we have a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to attacking or harassing other employees.”
Though American Airlines is completely angered by these videos, David is supported by his co-workers as well as the American Association of Flight Attendants. The association stated, “Anybody who can get us to smile under these circumstances, I applaud. American has completely overreacted. We support Gailen.”
